For most Lincoln residents, the United States Forest Service Trail Crew- a work force responsible for keeping trails clear and usable - has been a fixture in and around the nearby back country for as long as they can remember. This year, thanks in part to Federal disaster relief funds, the Trail Crew has expanded to include more laborers than any year in recent memory. Although the Forest Service has had a presence in Lincoln since the 1920's, the Trail Crew as an entity did n...
Today is my sweetheart’s birthday. He was born exactly three weeks before me, which puts us both under the astrological sign of Gemini – a personality pairing that astrology assures me is either brilliant, or disastrous. Whether or not you set any store by astrology, it’s still fun to read the occasional horoscope or breakdown of your astrological sign. Because each sign encompasses a number of personality traits, one can usually find some example in their own nature to back up the astrological data. Some of us, howev...
(Editor's Note: Readers of the BVD who have followed Dick Geary's exploits in Brazil during the past year may have noticed there hasn't been a column from him in the last month. Although we initially assumed he was having issues with his computer or the internet there, that unfortunately proved not to be the case. Everyone at the BVD is glad to hear Dick's health is improving and we wish him, his family and his friends all the best as they work through these challenging...
The Copper Queen Saloon, Helmville's only local watering hole, recently changed hands after more than two decades. "It was just time," Foell said of her decision to sell. The host of the official Helmville Rodeo Sunday night Labor Day Dance, the Copper Queen is known for its old-time Wes...
Northwestern Energy hosted an open-house style meet-and-greet at the Lincoln Community Hall Thursday, Apr. 19, encouraging locals to stop in and get to know Lincoln's new Northwestern Energy Town Manager, Shea Forkan. Forkan, who began work Jan 15, filled the position vacated by the retirement of Lincoln's well known "power guy" Mike Campbell, putting to rest concerns the position would be dissolved and that Lincoln would be serviced by technicians traveling from Helena....

Originally part of...
Normally, I’m not one for complaining about the weather. Several times this winter I was heard to remind my better half that he chooses to live in the mountains and thus snow and cold weather are to be expected and besides, isn’t it beautiful? I even took a sort of weird, nostalgic pleasure in experiencing a “real” winter, like the ones I remember from a childhood spent trudging through snowdrifts (uphill both ways) to meet the school bus. But, with March coming in like a lion and going out like an a-hole, even I have re...
Longtime Lincoln educator Annette Gardner has been chosen to lead Lincoln Schools' new Literacy Project as the Montana Comprehensive Literacy Plan Instructional Coach. The position - a long mouthful that Gardner likes to refer to as "McLPic" – goes into effect Monday, Apr. 9, at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Gardner will become full-time McLPic, while her kindergarten class will be taken over by substitute teacher Tyler Beller and the first grade class - formerly d...
