  • Mountain Cats edge Lady Lynx in nail-biter

    Connie McAfferty, BVD|Updated Jan 8, 2020

Basketball is not for the faint of heart in Lincoln these days. The tied up games and intense last seconds on the floor remind fans of the old Bette Davis line from “All About Eve” - “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” Saturday, Jan. 4 was indeed a bumpy night for the Lady Lynx in their shoot out with the lady Mountain Cats of Superior/Alberton. With the score tied up at the end of the third quarter, fans and players alike both looked worn out. The Mountain Cats ran a never-ending full court press on...

  • Deputy's Log Dec. 22 - Jan. 4

Deputy Robert Rivera, Lewis and Clark County Sheriffs Office|Updated Jan 8, 2020

Lewis and Clark County 911 Center received thirty calls for service during the weeks of Dec. 22, 2019 through Jan. 4, 2020. Five of those calls were traffic stops and four civil services performed by deputies in the Lincoln area. One call for service generated a case report: On Friday, Dec. 27, 2019, in the 800 block of Fourth Street North, deputies took a report of a cold domestic. The incident happened at an earlier date. Both parties were separated at the time of the...

  • Injuries plague Lynx in Pirate loss

    Connie McAfferty, BVD|Updated Jan 8, 2020

Senior standout Nathan Brown sat out the pre-game warm-up shoot around to rest his sore ankle, hurt in practice last week. In obvious pain, Brown still took the floor in the first quarter Jan. 3 and led his team to a nice lead over the visiting Victor Pirates basketball squad. Midway in the second quarter, Brown crashed into a pile of players under the Lynx bucket and when the scrim was sorted out, everyone got up except him. Bring out the ice and signal freshman Hayden...

  • Lady Lynx pound Victor 44 -15 in Friday night clash

    Connie McAfferty, BVD|Updated Jan 8, 2020

The home court advantage didn't look like much of an advantage up to the halftime of the Jan. 3 varsity visit by the Victor Lady Pirates. The size and skill of the Lady Lynx should have put them far ahead of the visitors but the score at mid-game was only 13-11. "The team was very nervous before the game, hands shaking and worried faces. But at half time they all came together to fire each other up to a more intense level of play. They rallied themselves," Said Coach Kurtis...

  • January at your Lincoln Library

    Tammy Jordan, BVD|Updated Jan 8, 2020

Just because it's winter in Lincoln doesn't mean there's not a lot going on at the local library. For starters, they have kicked off the year with "31 Uses for Your Library Card," to highlight various uses and resources available to patrons who hold a library card. Kate Radford, librarian for the Lincoln branch of the Lewis & Clark Library says, "There are way more than 31 uses and resources, but January has 31 days, and it seemed like a good place to start." On Jan. 1, they...

  • Skijor Lincoln cancelled

    Roger Dey, BVD|Updated Jan 8, 2020

The heavy snowfall in the last couple of days came too late to save the 4th Annual Skijor Lincoln. Late last week, faced with minimal snowpack, icy conditions, an uncertain forecast and a deadline to make the call, the Lincoln Valley Chamber of Commerce decided to scrap the event that had been scheduled for Jan. 18 and 19. "Even though it's snowing, the ground underneath is solid ice," LVCC President Laurie Richards said Monday. "The day we made the decision, the forecast...

  • Lincoln Fire Rescue fields new command rig

    Roger Dey, BVD|Updated Jan 7, 2020

The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department has taken on a more crimson hue with the addition of another new vehicle to its fleet. Last week the department acquired a 2003 Ford Excursion for use as the new command vehicle for the department, replacing the Ford diesel pickup truck driven by Lincoln Fire Chief Zach Muse. The new vehicle comes to Lincoln from the Helena Fire Department, where it served as their "Rescue 2," a sister unit to "Rescue 3," the Ford F550 rescue truck the...

  • Race to the Sky is coming to Lincoln

    Tammy Jordan, BVD|Updated Jan 7, 2020

"Get Your Mush On," is the new theme and tagline for the long-standing tradition of the annual Race to the Sky dog sled race. Now in its 35th year, this one should be another one for the books. Jack Beckstrom, one of the founders of the Race to the Sky event passed away two years ago. Since then, race organizer Chris Jewitt, along with other race staff have been working hard to continue Jack's work and the legacy of Race to the Sky. The Race is scheduled for February 7-11....

  • Lincoln boys tangle with Superior

    Connie McAfferty, MVD|Updated Jan 7, 2020

Calling themselves Mountain Cats, the basketball combine of Alberton - Superior came to Lincoln Jan. 4 to lay claim to “Top Cat in the Western C Conference.” The road to that achievement looked promising since the Lincoln Lynx top scorer and 2019 All-Conference standout, Nathan Brown, was benched with a disabled ankle that was injured last week. Surprises were the order of the day, however. With athletic feats of jumping, scoring and stealing, Brodi Henderson took the reins of the squad and led them to a thrilling tie gam...

  • Hey Howdy Hey

    Jim Oly, Lincoln|Updated Jan 7, 2020

Just wanted to send out a little Hey Howdy Hey of thanks to the fellows who run the Lincoln Transfer Site. Doug Cousins, who has been there 15 years and Dan Thomas who is under a month shy of three years. There is much work that is done at the site, along with many miles to cover with the truck. They travel east as far as the Montana Department of Transportation lot. West, they go out to Lone Point Rd and do the loop. South up Dalton Mountain and up Stemple Pas to McDunn’s, a...

Passion and staying true to your story are big parts of Hi Sign Brewing. Started by Mark Phillippe in 2017, Hi Sign Brewing is located in Austin, Texas, but has roots in Montana. Phillippe came up to Lincoln for the first time in 1996, and recalls his memories of time spent at his family's cabin on Hi Sign Road, "starting off years ago, before the craft beer boom, just coming up there and filling growlers in Helena and Missoula, hanging out on the Blackfoot, drinking beer in...

  • A choice of suffering

    Dick Geary, Featured Columnist|Updated Jan 7, 2020

Unearned suffering is redemptive. - Martin Luther King I had been in Barra do Bugres for about six months when a stranger knocked at my door. I could tell he was American by the sensible shoes he wore. The man lived in Paraguay but owned a tract of land about 40 miles from town. With his wife and son, he had come to take a look at it and to see what he had for squatters. My Brazilian counterpart had told him that I would go along. So the next morning we left, knowing only the...

  • Mountaintop Musings: The Cure for Worry

Dave Carroll, Community Bible Church of Lincoln|Updated Jan 7, 2020

Lately I have found great contentment in some areas that have caused me much stress. However, as I write this column, I find that some of those "areas" have come back. I am feeling some anger and uncertainty and I do not like that. I do not want to feel stressed and angry at any person or situation. But guess what, I do! That is not good. I am letting some circumstances rob me of my joy in the Lord. I am trying to control a situation that is not my responsibility, or maybe...

Eating healthier is a lifestyle change; it’s as simple as that. There is no such thing as magic. There are no pills to melt fat away and no diets to trick your body into burnin...

  • Southwest Montana Provides Distinctive Stories (Part 4 of 4)

Rick and Susie Graetz, University of Montana|Updated Jan 7, 2020

For the most part, the physical and social geography of Southwest Montana has changed little with the passage of time. Ranching and agriculture are the major lifestyles, and the Bitterroot and Gallatin valleys still draw the most folks. Water, which played a significant role in the past, is still important today. Here in this quadrant of the state is the gathering place for the rivers forming the three forks of the big Missouri. The Jefferson and Gallatin both get their start...
