Butte-Silver Bow County Health Officer Karen Sullivan was enjoying a drink in a Butte brewery after work when she said she got the call. For two months, she and her fellow county health officials across the state had been keeping tabs on reports of an outbreak of a strange new virus in Wuhan, China, but up until the evening of March 13, 2020, it had been business as usual for Sullivan and the county health department. Then a state official rang her at 6:30 p.m. "How's your...

If the last couple of weeks kept me busy preparing and this week has been all about recovery, then I’m here to tell you, moving forward has me really coming to terms with things I’m not very good at. Apparently all of my good, hard effort at developing patience has all but flown out the window, along with something else I’m even worse at… asking for and accepting help. While we’re on the subject of things I’m not very good at, let’s throw in being a person who has great ide...
I didn't study political science in college. I'm a soil scientist. So when people sling political terms around, I have to look them up in Webster's Dictionary. Webster writes that "socialism is when government takes over the means of production". Webster's says that "crony capitalism" occurs when business thrives not because of risk, but because of a cozy nexus between the business and the political class to make money for the corrupt. Communism, like Russia, is a perfect...

House Bill 2 is the only bill the Legislature is constitutionally required to pass, as it determines how much money state agencies and programs will receive for the next two years. This...
Lincoln's newly formed Little League team began practicing just a few short weeks ago with nearly 30 players, and they'll play their first game April 19. Shane Smith, who had been driving his son to Helena to play for three years, said some parents and volunteers got together this spring to try to coordinate a Lincoln team. "It was just an idea we started throwing around to other people to see if we could get Little League started up here," said Smith, who is coaching the...
Jeff Hollingworth joined Hi-Country early this year as the new Chief Financial Officer and jumped in to join the Lincoln Valley Chamber of Commerce as secretary around the same time. At Hi-Country, Hollingworth's current project is to get everything entered into a new enterprise resource planning software that will help combine and share information across all of Hi-Country's departments. "That's mostly what I do during the day. Other than that, I work with Steve [Fehrs] a...
