John Adams, supporter of American independence and a representative for Boston at the First Continental Congress, felt that, after America gained independence from Great Britain, July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate American Independence Day. July 2nd was when the vote for independence took place. July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was officially signed. Mountain Bikers travelling the Great Divide Mountain Bike route for the 2022 Tour Divide have been a common sight in Lincoln since the race started June 10, but they're not the only folks on the trail. On June 3, Karen Selle and her son Doug Gnida of Edmonton, Alberta, set off from Columbia Falls to travel the route on horseback to travel as far south as they can, with an eye toward at least reaching Pie Town, N.M. The Blackfoot Valley Dispatch didn't do too badly in this year's annual Montana Newspaper Associations Better Newspaper Contest, despite cutting back significantly on the number of submissions. The BVD, a Division 1 newspaper with a circulation of fewer than 1250, picked up a total of ten awards for photography and writing and even one for an ad. We brought home a first place for Best Feature Photo for "Feathering her Nest" an image by Roger Dey of a female Mountain Bluebird...

New crosswalk indicators, activated by a recently installed button on the crosswalk sign post, tells pedestrians that the lights on the post and on the school zone warning signs are flashing. The idea to incorporate a push button crosswalk indicator at the crosswalk between the library and Lincoln School was first floated about three years ago by former librarian Kate Radford. Although the idea was a simple solution to a long-standing problem and was approved by the Montana...

Something occurred to me this past week that I thought I would share with you all. As most of you know, I knit (among many other fiber-related activities). I knit small things and large things; items for myself, but mostly gifts for others. I knit at home, in the car (only when I’m a passenger, I promise), out on our deck, and when I’m out, even in the bar. I find the process soothing, sometimes challenging, occasionally frustrating, but most of all, when I’m done, it gives me...
A number of people -- private citizens, elected legislators and state staff -- achieved a quiet accomplishment recently. During the 2021 Legislative Session, two bills (SB 262 and SB 263) were passed to revise the duties of the Forest Lands Taxation Advisory Committee (FLTAC) and charge that advisory committee to examine and modernize the tax rate on Forest Land (Class 10) properties. Members of FLTAC have been meeting since July 9, 2021. Members include four forestry experts...
Q: My grandparents are products of the 1960s and they were all in, and still are. I have taken a different route and am a Christian. They keep giving me their books about self-empowerment and say that the Bible supports this ideology. I have read parts of these books that seem unbiblical. - M.B. A: Humanism has taken on the form of religion; glorifying self and taking God out of His rightful place. Humanism is the worship of self. A London magazine carried a story that said, "No more subtle enemy has ever faced the Christian...

With the busiest weekend of the year on the horizon, members of The Lincoln Rodeo Club have been hard at work preparing the rodeo grounds for the 70th Annual Lincoln Open Rodeo held every year during the weekend closest to Independence Day. That's the date we picked because it was going to be our 33rd opening anniversary." However, the closing date was pushed back as the Forkans...
