  • Upper Blackfoot Chronicles: Lincoln Telephone

    Updated Aug 13, 2020

From Gold Pans and Singletrees Mail delivery provided one link with the outside world and within the Blackfoot Valley, and in 1921, citizens of Lincoln looked into another form of communication. At two o'clock on Sept. 27, 1921, the first meeting of the telephone company was called by Mr. Holgate. Paul Didriksen was elected secretary. The members discussed the materials they would need for the telephone service. They talked about what kind of posts, where they should be placed...

  • 19th Amendment marks 100 years of women's voting rights

    Kate Radford, Contributing Writer|Updated Aug 13, 2020

On Aug. 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, declaring, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This year marks the 100th anniversary of the amendment, and organizations across the country are hosting events and celebrations in commemoration. The term suffrage, which is now defined as the right of voting or the exercise of such right, stems from the Latin, meaning a...

  • Montana State Library helping provide internet to communities through Hotspots

    Kate Radford, Contributing Writer|Updated Aug 13, 2020

The Montana State Library is working to make hotspots, which will provide internet access and unlimited data, available to communities across the state through public libraries. Hotspots are small digital devices that allow users to connect cell phones, tablets and computers to wifi. The hotspots provided by MSL connect through cell towers using either Verizon or T-Mobile service, meaning the hotspot must be able to connect to a cell tower to provide internet access. The need...

  • Op-Ed: In November, Keep Your Eye on the Forest

    Sen. Dave Lewis|Updated Aug 13, 2020

I have known Bob Brown for years, and I even ran for Lieutenant Governor with him when he ran for Governor in 2004. He is a good guy who is fun to sit and visit with. But he has one failing, which probably comes from his growing up in the trees in Whitefish – being able to see the forest from the trees. I was saddened to see his editorial announcing his withdrawal from the Republican Party and blasting Senator Daines and Congressman Gianforte for supporting President Trump. There are forces at work that want us to become a so...

  • From My Perspective: Finding the things we love

    Tammy Jordan|Updated Aug 13, 2020

We find the things we love when we take the time to encourage growth in ourselves. Think about it, did you just wake up and realize one day that you like to (fill in the blank) or, was it something you learned? Better yet, was it something you learned from someone special, important or influential in your life? For me, it was learning how to crochet with my grandmother. I remember growing up as a child watching her create the coolest things. They may not have been cool to...

  • Jewels of the Sky: Hummingbirds of Western Montana

Jackie Bussjaeger, This is Montana Editor|Updated Aug 13, 2020

Hummingbirds are stunning creatures: not only for their jewel-like beauty and gravity-defying aerial acrobatics but also for their sheer fortitude. Every fall, they migrate thousands of miles to Mexico or Central America. Their wings thrum at up to 80 beats per second. When they sleep, their body drops into a state of torpor: their heartbeat and breathing slow to a state almost near death. Yet when they awake, their first order of business is hovering about trees and...

  • Lincoln ahead of other rural areas in broadband access

    Kate Radford, Contributing writer|Updated Aug 13, 2020

Broadband internet is a big buzzword these days, as employees and students frantically started working and learning from home when businesses and schools shut down earlier this year due to COVID-19. Connection to fast and reliable internet, which is usually better with broadband, can affect students' access to materials, employees abilities to do their jobs, as well as tele-health capabilities, which can be especially important in rural communities like Lincoln. Over the past...

The expansion is possible due to a $25,000 Business Innovation Grant through the State of Montana that was awarded to the Vallers and their growing business. "Heritage House began when we saw a need to promote Lincoln and surrounding area artisans, and then with the need to provide quality animal feed through our Feed Barn. Now we see the need to grow and...

The lookout on Stonewall Mountain first identified the fire in a remote area of Fields Gulch six miles south of Lincoln, prompting a response the following day that included two helicopters and three engines from the Lincoln Ranger District.
