  • Nature Picks: Cranberries and Sundews

    Kate Radford, BVD|Updated Aug 31, 2022

The Thanksgiving holiday is commonly associated with food, and while turkey is often the main dish, cranberries, Vaccinium macrocarpon, are a complimentary side. Cranberries grow in extremely precise conditions, needing wetland bogs to thrive. Bogs are found in cooler northern climates and often develop in lake basins created by glaciers, according to the National Geographic Society. Bogs tend to be oxygen and nutrient poor, making them uninhabitable for many plant species,...

  • Return of the Old West Christmas Fest

    Roger Dey, BVD|Updated Aug 31, 2022

It might not have been cold and snowy in Ovando last Friday, but Christmas was in the air as the Old West Christmas Fest brought scores of people to town. As with so, so many events in 2020, concerns about the lingering COVID-19 pandemic prompted organizers to scrap the annual festival last year, with hopes for better luck in 2021. And better luck they had, despite some scaling back. "My big thing is I want to make sure everyone knows it's kind of a building year after...

  • Jr High Lynx hoops train rolls on

    Connie McCafferty, BVD|Updated Aug 31, 2022

There's no nail-biting, tense show-down in the current win streak of junior high Little Lynx boys basketball games this month, but there are plenty of entertaining moments to entice the fans to come out in support of the team. The "Big and Tall" club of Roegun Dietz, Kayden Tybo and Josh Rios was bigger and taller in the Nov. 18 crushing defeat of Drummond, posting a 58 - 31 win against a visiting squad that fielded twice the number of players as the young home team. Ahead at...

    Roger Dey, BVD|Updated Dec 1, 2021

    Updated Dec 1, 2021

We always talk about the beauty of a child’s unlimited imagination, as if we long to capture and access those curiosities into our adulthood. It is indeed a wonder what children come up with. And maybe if we practice seeing the world through their eyes, we might see the world differently ourselves---one of endless possibilities. So here are a few things born of childhood curiosity. In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson mixed a concoction of soda powder and water. It was the dead of winter, and he forgot about his little e...

  • Explaining cloud storage

    Metro|Updated Dec 1, 2021

Technology advances at such a rapid pace that it can be hard for consumers to keep up. Something that maybe didn't exist as recently as a few years ago may already be considered obsolete, while some solutions that were on the periphery for years may suddenly become vital to how individuals and businesses operate. Cloud storage likely qualifies as something that, though it's been available for many years, figures to become a bigger part of people's daily lives in the coming...

  • Governor Gianforte: Enforce Montana's "Bad Actor" Mining Law

    Kathy Hadley|Updated Dec 1, 2021

As a hunter and angler who's lived in the Upper Clark Fork River valley between Deer Lodge and Anaconda for more than 30 years, I can attest to the damaging legacy of mining on our waterways. In 1908, a massive flood carried toxic mine tailings from Butte down the Clark Fork River, contaminating the river and the floodplain. To this day, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to clean up these toxic mine tailings in Butte, Silver Bow Creek, and the river. For 30...

  • Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill creates Montana jobs, lowers costs

    U.S. Senator Jon Tester|Updated Dec 1, 2021

As a farmer, I know firsthand that good things take time. Every year, I plant my fields with crops like wheat, barley, peas, and saffron, and in July, August, and September, I harvest those crops and reap what I've sown. Writing laws is much the same – and this fall, after a long spring and summer of working with Republicans and Democrats, Montana is set to reap urgently-needed upgrades to our crumbling infrastructure and strong economic growth across our state, thanks to m...

  • From My Perspective: It's Not Really Goodbye

    Tammy Jordan|Updated Dec 1, 2021

Sometimes in life, we find friends that mean the world to us. We just connect with them, and they become part of us. I can count on one hand the number of extremely close friends I have, both in Lincoln and elsewhere. It takes a lot to make my one-handed list. And please don’t take it the wrong way - I have LOTS of friends, and even more acquaintances. It’s bound to happen when you are one of those “people-persons” like me. I am grateful, and value every single one of those co...

The Dalton Mountain Road Bridge open house hosted by the Montana Department of Transportation Nov. 18 provided some insight into the state's plans for the bridge replacement, The processes and...
