Summer in Ovando is shaping up to be a quiet one this year. Business has been picking up for the small community in the last two weeks, after the state lifted the 14-day quarantine requirement for out-of-state visitors, but some mainstays of the community's summer will continue to feel the impact of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, after about a month-and-a-half of discussion that involved more than 20 members of the community, the town opted to call...
C. V. Rubottom, one of the builders of the Lincoln community Hall, included a short look at Lincoln's Independence Day celebrations during the years right around 1920 in "The Bright Side of Ranch Life," a chapter of his unpublished Montana Memories.. The following appeared in the UBVHS Gold Pans and Singl trees as part of his description of building of the Hall in 1918. The Fourth of July was always an important holiday in our valley. The women folks usually planned on new...
Lincoln was the first pit stop for the vintage automobiles, which left from Helena at about 8 a.m. Monday and reached Lincoln at about 11 a.m. From here they headed out for Fairfield for a lunch stop. Dozens came to a party for Rhonda McClure last Wednesday to wish her well on her move back to Wisconsin after 40 years in Montana, most of those spent here in Lincoln with her husband Bob. Rhonda first came to Montana in 1980, when she was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. Although she'd won a four-year scholarship to college in Wisconsin, Rhonda chose instead to enlist. Her parents wouldn't sign for her, so she waited until she turned 18 the summer after...

With fire season on the horizon, the Lincoln Ranger District is preparing to tackle wildfires in a different way. Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the large fire camps that spring up during fires are generally off the table, as the camp crews that normally manage the camps and feed the fire crews aren't available this year. Likewise, concerns about the potential for coronavirus spread means the district won't bring in fire crews and fire management teams from around the...

Although we celebrated Father's Day this past weekend, I felt it might be a good time to pay a tribute to Dads – especially mine – for just one more week. In my opinion, dads, like moms, really do deserve more than just a day to celebrate them. For those of you that don't know me personally, I lost my Dad almost two years ago to cancer. Father's Day has become one of "those" holidays where I find myself missing him just a little bit more than usual (along with his bir...
Be it Summer, Winter, Spring, or Fall, whatever time of the year you will see this young fellow of 86 out for his daily walk down through Lincoln. Pryor to that, Mack was in the Navy from 1952 to 1956 and for three and a half years, Mack ran the office for the Blue Angels. When out of the service, Mack had worked for the Great Falls Gas Co. for more than 10 years. In...
The Lincoln Solid Waste Board has decided to pause plastics recycling for one year, starting July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021. One of the reasons for the move is the COVID pandemic, said Misty Edwards of the Lincoln Solid Waste Board. “We don’t necessarily want the attendants handling plastic,” she said. Edwards said the larger reason for the pause in recycling is changes in the market. “We don’t have a market for plastics right now. Our plastics used to be grouped together in a co-op and sold to China. China changed w...
"It's a wind game," said Rich Debick as he described the key component of competitive shooting Saturday afternoon, June 13.* Gusty cross winds gave members of the Lincoln Sportsman Club a chance to tackle that game during a demonstration of proper bench rest shooting and flag reading at the clubs new range on Wendell Weavers property, off Cooper's Lake Road east of Ovando. Debick, who shoots competitively, brought three of his rifles along to give club members the chance to...
This past Saturday was a great day. Not because it was Saturday, but because my son Jesse and I got to do some long overdue maintenance on his pickup truck. You see Jesse has the potential to be a very good mechanic, but like his Pa he gets his priorities mixed up. His poor ol' truck has had to endure two broken rear leaf springs for longer than I care to think. Jesse has put up with lots of creaking, noise, and strange handling due to those broken springs. He and I spent...
When COVID-19 restrictions led to the 2020 Lincoln Fireman's Ball cancellation, the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department adapted by hosting an online auction through Facebook, which concluded May 30. "It's going to be right around $14,000," said Fire Chief Zach Muse, regarding how much money the auction raised. "Considering what's going on, we're more than thrilled." Muse said the Fireman's Ball usually raises $18,000-20,000. "I think we'll probably be okay to make it through...
Hooper Park, had a delayed opening this year due to maintenance issues, but the park's camp host position has been filled for the first time in about three years, said Lincoln Parks Board chairman Nyle Howsmon. The bathrooms at Hooper Park, which reopened last summer after a two-and-a-half-year closure, needed repairs this year and caused a delay in the park's seasonal opening this year. "We actually missed Memorial Day," said Howsmon. "There were a couple of repairs from the...
There will be modifications coming to the way the Blackfoot Valley Dispatch does business, but like it or not, you're still stuck with us Rather than pull the plug on the BVD before it reaches its 40th birthday this December, we decided in April to survey both our readers and advertisers, and to take some time to re-evaluate our business model and our future in the wake of the COVID-19 economic downturn. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your opinions in our surveys, which brought us a better response than we...

With the 4th of July just around the corner, here are a few important tips to keep your pets safe. Keep your pets secured during fireworks, inside your home. Give them a safe place to hide like a comfortable room or a dog crate. Mask the noise of the fireworks by turning up the TV or radio. Make sure their tags are current, just in case they do get out Skip the celebration and stay home with them. Sometimes your presence makes all the difference. I have known a few people...

The concern surrounding COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of Lincolnstock, the annual music festival held at Hooper Park that had been scheduled for Aug. 1. Gary Zadick, who organizes and funds the free concert for the community as part of his annual family reunion, announced the event's cancellation earlier this month. "I didn't want to have any fuss," he said, adding the ongoing pandemic raised concerns about people gathering close together at the event. "I do it for...
Thanks to some very generous people, the Lincoln Community Garden has water and is up and running again for the gardening season. In April, the Lincoln Community Garden had a problem with their water pump, which eventually failed and needed to be replaced. Gary and Nancy Zadick and Ernie and Renee Lundberg made monetary donations, while Tony Tams, Fred Rowley, Justin Moler, Mark Smith, and Rick Dolson donated time, materials and labor.
