Lincoln was awash in off-highway vehicles last weekend as people took advantage of nice weather and back to back rides here during the long Memorial Day weekend. The weekend kicked off with the annual Memorial Day Weekend ATV Fun Run, hosted this year by Bushwackers. The Fun Run, which traditionally has served as the first major event of the summer season, was complemented this year by a new event: the Blackfoot Valley Optimist's Scavenger Hunt. The idea for the scavenger...
Blackfoot Pathways: Sculpture in the Wild received a new grant this year to help fund some facilities improvements and greater access to the park for visitors with special needs. The Treacy Foundation based in Helena provided a grant to help fund construction of a utility room next to the park's bathrooms, as well as a cement pad to smooth out the lip to get onto the current bathroom pads. "The Treacy Foundation has helped us in the past with the funding of these toilets....

He told of Moina Belle Michael, who penned 'We Shall Keep the Faith' a poem in response to McCrae. She created the tradition of wearing poppies with a pledge "to KEEP THE FAITH and always to wear a red poppy of...

After a coronavirus-related hiatus last year, an abridged Tour Divide once again brought cyclists racing down the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route through the Blackfoot Valley, en route to the Mexican border. With the Canadian border still closed and travel restrictions still in place for many countries due to COVID-19, this year's Tour is a 2450-mile, border-to-border race called the Great Divide Classic. About 300 miles shorter than the regular Tour Divide, it follows the Gr...
When unusual weather occurrences happen, like snow storms in late May, it can alter the migratory paths of wildlife, and species may be found in places it is uncommon for them to be. Among birds, this is sometimes referred to as an irruption, where one or more species moves south out of their normal ranges in search of food. As happened in Lincoln this spring, birds may also be seen at lower elevations than their normal ranges. A few varieties of birds that aren't usually...
With the celebration of Mother's Day in May and Father's Day in June, Lincoln residents can look forward to the birth of ungulate babies during those same months. White-tailed deer, elk, and moose, which all range in the Lincoln area, give birth to fawns and calves in late May and early June. Deer fawns and elk calves are both born with spots, while moose calves are solid-colored at birth. The Montana range of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, covers the entire state...

Memorial Day weekend set the tone for the summer, with back-to-back ATV events on Saturday and Sunday. Other organizations and non-profits have their own events scheduled throughout the summer, making up for the string of cancellations that defined last year. The annual Community Spring Rummage Sale is this weekend, June 19 and 20, with more than 20 sales on...
Wow, Lincoln was hopping for rummage sale days last weekend. There were 27 sales on the map. I forgot one and added it where I could. A gentleman came in and was having a garage sale that did not know about the town-wide sales, he could not be on the map, but I tossed his info on social media, he put signs up and he said today the sale went great. I went to quite a few sales and ran into a few that were not on the town wide map, but they put up signs and had successful sales...

In recent weeks I’ve had a lot of people ask me where I come up with the ideas for this column. Usually, my response is something to the effect of “just things I think about,” or “the things in my head.” Some are perplexed that there could be that many things I things I think about on a regular basis. Others, like my other half and those who know me pretty well, will often joke that they would never want to be in my head, and regard it as a bit of a scary place. Fortunately fo...
A semi carrying a load of building materials on a flatbed trailer tipped over near Roger's Pass Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Groschelle said the flatbed truck was traveling too fast as it entered the first big corner east of the pass, tipped over and spilled its load of building materials. "A lot of people misjudge that corner," Groschelle said. Lincoln Fire Chief Zach Muse said most of the material - a type of fiber cement board called Hardie Board - wound up in the...
The Lincoln Fireman's Ball was the latest local event to make a comeback as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes and restrictions loosen up. Normally scheduled a weekend in March around St. Patrick's Day, the Ball had to be cancelled last year as the Lewis and Clark Public Health began implementing restrictions related to the spread of the novel coronavirus. Instead they hosted a successful auction via Facebook to help raise funds for the fire company. Despite the success of last...
Lincoln's first farmers market in two years kicked off on June 4 with several booths and a steady flow of visitors at Valler's Market. The plan to start a Farmers Market in Lincoln originated with Envision Lincoln's Health and Wellness Action team in 2018. “When you have a hammer, everything is a nail. When you have a blacksmith, everything is anything you want it to be” It seems today that the word “blacksmith,” most often calls to mind the image of the farrier shaping shoes for horses. While it is true that a farrier is a blacksmith, a blacksmith isn't necessarily a farrier. As the quote above shows, blacksmithing is much more. It is the art of forging metal using tools like a hammer, an anvil and a forge to make objects which range from tools to hooks to gates, hinges to scu...
Lighting that moved through the area on the evening of June 3 caused two small fires near Lincoln that required a response by firefighters. Bill Cyr with the Montana DNRC reported at the June 4 Lincoln Government Day that one fire was on the McInnis property along the Blackfoot River, near Highway 279. The second was near Moon Drive in the Lone Point area. Cyr said they also had reports of two other fires, but had no information on them. One was reportedly in the Stemple Pass...
The June 4 Government Day meeting served as the first in a series of projected meetings in Lincoln to discuss the funding for maintenance of Lincoln’s hard surface streets. Lincoln is generally on a seven to nine year cycle for chip sealing to preserve the paved streets in town. The streets in town were last chip sealed in 2014. They were originally slated to be redone this year, but due to COVID-19 meeting restrictions, Lewis and Clark County officials opted to push it back a year to ensure they could hold the necessary p...
Lincoln students who completed the Montana History class in the 2019-2020 school year were unable to go on the class field trip to Yellowstone, which was canceled due to the pandemic. The three day trip took the six students who completed the class and hadn't yet graduated throughout Montana and into Wyoming. "It was busy, but we crammed a lot in," said Lincoln science teach...

This past week I had to say goodbye to my canine companion and best shotgun road trip partner. It was a tough few days, especially those leading up to her appointment. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to call and cancel that appointment, but that would have been selfish and no way to honor the companion who had given me so much of herself over the last 13 years. I met Baby in 2008. She was three. I was an overnight vet tech in an animal ER. By day, I worked at the a...
