How Lincoln School will end its school year will depend on how the Governor's stay-at-home and school-closure directives are lifted and what the phased reopening of the state looks like. This will impact whether students continue distance learning through the end of the school year, if high school spring sports resume, and how schools handle graduation celebrations. The Office of Public Instruction issued a memo April 9 advising schools to continue their distance learning... Full story
For background, we have received dozens of reach-outs from school leaders asking for our opinions or guidance on how the remainder of the school year will proceed in light of the COIVD-19 outbreak. If the Governor's "Stay At Home" and "School Closure" orders are not extended through the remainder of the school year, of course, local districts are welcome to proceed however they would like as Montana is a local control state. However, we cannot imagine a scenario where social...
Lincoln School teachers adapted quickly to Governor Bullock's March 15 announcement that schools would be closing for two weeks, rallying together and compiling materials to ensure students at all grade levels would continue to receive quality instruction. "Everyone was really great about getting their plans put in place quickly, and by Wednesday, our students had packets or online classes to work with," Laura Allen-Bullis, the business and technology teacher, said. Annette Ga...

Steve Bullock announced a statewide, two-week shutdown of all K-12 schools related to coronavirus. Currently, the two weeks will not have to...
After spending weeks designing experiments, writing hypotheses, and testing out theories, Pre-K through 10th grade students presented their findings to judges on Thursday, Mar. 5 at the annual Lincoln School Science Fair. Nancy Schwalm is a new science teacher this year at Lincoln School, and this was her first experience coordinating the Science Fair. "I think it went very well. Obviously, I learned some things that I'm going to do differently next time," said Schwalm. She...
A new student-initiated class at the Lincoln School District this year has started a YouTube channel and creates a school-related news broadcast every two weeks. In April 2019, Sage Kamps and Jaken Shelton, then juniors, attended Journalism Day at the University of Montana with English teacher Philip Reed. Based on what they learned, they proposed that Lincoln students create a media class to make a regular broadcast with school news. When Laura Allen-Bullis took on the class,...
The Lincoln School's Wildlife class, taught by Nancy Schwalm, has been using game cameras to capture images of wildlife species inhabiting the Lincoln area in hopes of learning more about their patterns, movements, behaviors and survival skills. Students began putting cameras out at the beginning of the year and have been monitoring them at least once a week. They currently have four cameras out in the Lincoln area and each week students change out the memory cards and...
When Lincoln technology teacher Laura Allen-Bullis wanted to upgrade the seating in her classroom to keep up with student needs, she sought funding for wobble stools, chairs with rounded bases that allow students to move while staying seated. Allen-Bullis listed her project on DonorsChoose, a website designed to help teachers fundraise for classrooms and projects, to raise the $1200 needed to replace seating for all the computers in her room. Local funders quickly began to sup...
Despite a Valentine's Day loss to the St. Regis Tigers, Nathan Brown had a remarkable night. In addition to passing a 1600 'career points' milestone, he also scored 48 points during the game, setting a new Lincoln High School record for points scored in a single game and beating a record set by his father and coach Shane Brown. During the game Brown shot 67 percent from the floor, which included sinking 8 of 12 three pointers. See pages 6 and 7 for Connie McCafferty's recap...
In some basketball games, everyone shows up testy: fans, refs and players. Friday, Feb. 14 was one of those nights. The contest between the Lynx and the St. Regis Tigers was a knock-down physical tussle right from the first whistle, and the no-nonsense officials did their best to try and keep some sense of order in the stands and on the court. They almost succeeded. The intense defense put three Lynx starters in foul trouble early. With Brodi Henderson, Ryan Greenwood and...
Friday night, Feb. 14, came up all hearts and flowers for the Lincoln Lady Lynx in their hard-fought win over the St. Regis Lady Tigers. The first period found the Lynx outscored and even the usual leaders couldn't make a basket. The St. Regis ladies were not a tall squad, but they were strong, athletic and accurate shooters. Frustration was thick in the air on the court and in the hometown stands. But, it was Senior Night after all and, in the end, it was the senior Lincoln...
Lincoln Public Schools introduced a new class this semester to manage the school's website. Four students will be working with technology teacher Laura Allen-Bullis to update and refresh the website and content. "The students are really excited to make it better," she said. The students really lik...
The Saturday morning tournament of multiple schools who brought their junior high teams to Lincoln had some new twists and turns for all the fans. Starting at 9 a.m., the teens running the concession stand made a land office business of selling donuts and maple bars out in the stands, and the eye-opening coffee was extra strong. The Lincoln Little Lynx A-team made the first bucket in the contest against the Fairfield junior high Eagles and Lincoln led all the way to the wire,...

Local 5th grader Elijah Barnett was one of five winners in the Lewis & Clark Library’s annual Dear Author Contest this January, earning a Sphere SPRK+ robot for himself, four tickets to a Helena Big Horns hockey game, and $150 for the Lincoln School Library. The contest, which is similar to the Library of Congress’s program Letters About Literature, invited 4th and 5th grade students to write a letter to an author who inspired them and submit it to their public library. The letters were then judged by a small team of Lew...
