Football season a learning experience for players and coach

Lincoln Lynx new head football coach Travis William said the team is looking good at the start of the season, with more players taking the field than he's seen in a long time.

"We've got a good balance, good mix of guys," they've all got the right attitude and they're ready to work," he said during practice Thursday afternoon.

Although the Lynx got shut out 70-0 in their season opener against Noxon Friday, Aug. 24, Williams said the team nevertheless worked together admirably.

"The team stayed together. They never turned on each other. They were positive. They took it as a learning experience and I'm really proud of that," he said.

The season is also proving to be a learning experience for Williams, who played as center for the Lynx from 2005-2008 back when the team was playing eight-man ball.

"I grew up with eight-man ball. Six man's a little different," he said. "The kids are teaching me a lot; I'm learning a lot from them"

He said some of the standout differences include the fact that anyone who's on the field is eligible to receive a pass, that first downs are 15 yards instead of 10 and that whoever takes the snap can't run the ball.

"Just a few things I've had to learn," he said.

Williams, who coached junior high football last year, has the help of Jerum Auclair as his assistant coach this year.
