The Blackfoot Valley's News Source Since 1980
Mary Hillerman didn't have to go far to find herself teaching 2nd grade at Lincoln School. Born and raised on a small ranch in Helmville, she attended Helmville School, Drummond High School and Montana State University. She then found her way back to Helmville for her student teaching and her first teaching position.
"I think I always knew I would be a teacher." Hillerman said "My mother has inspired me to become a teacher."
Hillerman's mother and sister are also teachers.
In her junior year of high school Hillerman began volunteering at Drummond Elementary, which helped her confirm that teaching is what she wanted to do when she grew up.
When looking for her next teaching position, Hillerman said she liked that Lincoln was close to Helmville and the four-day school week. She also enjoys how close it is to the Blackfoot River, so she can get some fishing in after work. She enjoys the closeness and community feel of Lincoln. "Everyone is always so friendly and always welcoming"
Lincoln School is a bit bigger than the three-room school house Hillerman taught in last year, however she said she still likes how small it feels. She also enjoys the fun staff that helps create an enjoyable learning environment.
"My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the students' faces when they finally understand a concept." Hillerman said. "It's a joy to see the light bulbs click."
She also loves getting to know each of her students and helping them grow in their education. "It's rewarding to know that I am a part of helping them become who they are when they get older."
When not in the classroom Hillerman enjoys camping, fishing, hiking and crafts.
