The headliner game of the Wednesday night volleyball marathon was the older, more accomplished A-squad of the junior high Lady Lynx going up against the Lady Prospectors of Granite County in a non-conference match.
It was also an endurance marathon for the fans who rooted and cheered through five sets of high-intensity volleyball.
Coming out strong - it was “Homecoming Spirit Week” after all - the junior high ladies from Lincoln eked out a win in the first set that was punctuated by a thrilling spike at the net by seventh grade tall tower Maddie Sampson.
The Lynx gym was decorated with Spirit Week posters to encourage their hitters including one that said, “Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit.” This adage could have been the theme of the evening as the Lynx ladies struggled but never quit giving their max effort in the disappointing loss, 25-22,9-25, 9-15, 16-18 and 9-25.
Set four was a nail-bitter, with the score tied up four times and an ending that could have easily gone either way.
Eighth grader Jess Zarske had an ace serve that blinded the opponents as it blazed into their court and JJ Lewenight, using her height, had several block attempts at the net and ace serves.
Zarske and Lewenight are the only players to move up to junior varsity next year, so look for more quality hitting from the young junior high ladies next season.
