The somber melody of "Pomp and Circumstance" brought the audience to their feet as the 2019 graduation ceremony of Lincoln High School opened with the incoming march of the twelve graduates. With serious expressions, and a few tears, the Class of 2019 strode in and took their seats under the banner of the class motto by Dr. Seuss, "You're off to great places, today is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!
Co-valedictorians Maggie Jorgensen and Bridger Kamps thanked their teachers, staff and fellow students for helping them along the four year journey. Bridger was overcome with emotion when he described how close the class had been, good friends who had encouraged and loved each other through the trials and pain of succeeding and failing through the growing up years.
Lincoln is a generous community when it comes to supporting the school and its future citizens. Tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships were awarded to many of the graduates, recognizing everything from academic excellence to creativity and community service.
The keynote message was an inspirational speech by teacher and next year's principal Shane Brown.
He reminded the gradating class that one of the most important skills in adult life is to cultivate and treasure friendships. Learning a career, making money, and starting a family will be enriched by the warm circle of friends that we gather around us he said.
"This class has been one of the closest, caring groups that we have had in our school,” he said. “Don't lose those relationships as you go out into the future. Success is a lonely road if you get there all alone."
Next up for the new graduates: writing all those thank you notes for the baskets of cards and gifts that awaited them on the back table, a tangible sign of how much they will be missed.
