Lincoln firefighters take advantage of empty building to hone skills
The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department took advantage of an empty house at 728 Main Street in Lincoln to conduct real-world training Saturday, June 22.
Using smoke bombs, small piles of burning straw and a simulated casualty, firefighters practiced making their way through a building none of them had been in before, in the low visibility of a smoke-filled building.
"It gave us a real-life scenario with live fire and we were able to do different scenarios; from a rescue of an occupant to a rescue of a downed firefighter due to wall collapse," Lincoln fire Chief Zach Muse said. "Other than burning it down, we can't get much more realistic."
The Lincoln firefighters were joined in the training by Helmville firefighters Tommy Applegate, Ty Daniel and Dan Schatz.
Property owner Andreas Hermann, allowed the LVFD to use the house for training. The building is slated to be demolished this summer, after the Upper Blackfoot Valley Historical takes ownership of the property. Once the property changes hands, efforts are expected to get underway to reconstruct the historic Matt King House there.
