Building Community through Craft

Tammy Jordan wasn't born and raised in Lincoln, but she has embraced this town as her own. She brings to the community a love of fiber arts and the joy of teaching people of all ages how to craft their own creations from wool.

For Jordan it's more than wool and knitting. She strives for a deeper theme to her life through her art and her dedication to Lincoln. That theme is connection.

Her classes create a thread that connect people through one common interest. Wool.

She starts with the sheep she's raised. Her flock includes Stormy, Carbon, Annie, Stardust, Nellie Bly, Burt, and Pinky. With names like these, and the cute faces to go with them, we may all own sheep soon.

From the sheep, to the wool she's shorn that she will use to teach students how to spin, to the yarn she's spun that beginning knitters will use in her knitting classes.

Then connections happen between individuals taking her classes. Maybe they will continue to spin or knit, or both, sharing with others they've met in class, buying sheep or joining the Lincoln Fiber Circle.

This can happen because Jordan set a twist on the strand that connects and builds community in Lincoln.

If you think creating art is for other people, then Jordan's classes may surprise you.

Jordan says people from all walks of life enjoy knitting and spinning. Wool, sheep and craft are the common interests that connects each individual. She says you can't find a better group of people; like a slight twist on the theme from her favorite Luke Bryant song, "most people in wool are good."

Jordan is currently offering Beginning Knitting and Beginning Spinning classes. They are open to everyone and are a way to create art with your kids, friends and family, and to make new connections through crafting beautiful projects.

You can take a class or join Jordan in one of her volunteer activities by contacting her at: 406-633-0073 or at [email protected]. She's friendly folk, so don't hesitate to reach out to her. Don't forget to check out her website, goldieknotsmt.wordpress.com, where she's "creating connections one fleece at a time."
