The Drummond Junior High Trojans marched into Lincoln Tuesday, Nov. 14th to open a two game after-school contest with the Lincoln Lynx.
First up was the younger "B" squad of 5th and 6th graders who played with lots of exuberance, put up lots of shots, and even made a bucket every now and then. Ditto for Drummond.
The numerous vocal Trojan fans kept their players jacked up, but the tight score, which was tied up six times, motivated the hometown crowd to cheer their boys on, too.
At the end of regulation play, the score was tied 20 - 20, so into OT they went. Coach Brown pulled out a secret motivational talk during the rest break, and when his Lynx took the floor for the OT tip-off, it looked like a whole different squad had mysteriously appeared inside the sweaty green and white uniforms of his tired young team.
Asa Lattin and Roegun Dietz were suddenly canning every shot and making every free throw. Finally aggressive and confident, the team played with poise, running their plays and putting up a tough defense, limiting the Trojans to only four points in OT.
Final score: 30 - 24. A win!
High point man was Dietz with 14 points (six in OT). The Lattin brothers, Asa and Tahvo, had six each and Josh Rios added four.
The "A" game of the 7th and 8th grade players was almost as amazing, but in a 'Freezing Rain' type of event. The fans were incredulous that the usual high scorers couldn't seem to buy a basket or free throw. Cold shooting doesn't begin to describe it. The final buzzer closed out the game at 18 – 39, bringing blessed relief to everyone from Lincoln.
Andrew Brown put in eight points; 8th graders Wesson Dempster and Logan Joyce totaled three each. Roegun Dietz and Tahvo Lattin were called up from the "B" team to help out and both contributed two points.
Next week Coach Brown works on a new motivational talk for his "A" team.
