National Honor Society inducts new member

Lincoln High School Sophomore Jenna Templeton joined the ranks of the National Honor Society Tuesday Nov. 26, at a a small induction ceremony at the Lincoln School Library.

Templeton joined Makenzie Story and Lindsey Weisner as the third member of the Society at the school.

Fewer than 30 Lincoln students have been inducted into the National Honor Society since the school established a chapter here in 2010.

National Honor Society adviser Joanie Templeton said her daughter Jenna was the only student to complete the induction requirements this year, which include a 3.0 grade point average, personal references, an essay and 10 hours of community service on projects driven by the honor society members. This year they are looking at a project involving holiday activities for elementary kids.

The qualifications are based on scholarship, services, leadership and character, the Honor Societies "four pillars."

Joanie Templeton said she's not sure why more students didn't put in the effort to join the Societies, which is the only organization at the school that indicates an academic achievement and that can help a student's chances on both scholarship and college applications.

"It does set you apart for character and grades," she said.

She said she expects to see more kids apply in the coming years, due in part to changes in the group dynamics of the kids coming up through the grades.
