Outdoor Club plans for busy winter

Organizers for the Outdoor Club met last Monday to discuss upcoming events and schedule their first Community Skate night.

The club received a donation from The Wilderness Society to fund the skating rink addition which should be here and set up this week. The addition will double the size of the rink they were using last year and arrives just in time, as the Outdoor Club has their First Community Skate scheduled for Thursday, Jan 23 from 4:30-7:30-pm. The event is open to the public and free of charge. While there are skates available, participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

The club plans to host these community skate nights, open to the public, at least once a month throughout the winter, depending on the weather. Concessions will be available and will include warm food and beverages. Money raised through sales will go to the Outdoor Club to help with their continuing activities.

A lot of kids don't know about the Outdoor Club, so one of the primary goals is to get the word out about it. The club has lots of fun outdoor activities planned, including cross-country skiing, ice skating, snow-shoeing and more. This month, they are hosting cross country skiing and ice skating to help kids get outside and enjoy our winter weather. They will meet at the green building by the football field. Members of the public are welcome to bring their own equipment, or to use the equipment available. There is equipment available for children around the size of a 3rd grader up to adult size.

Activities are subject to change or cancel due to weather or authorization. The schedule for the remainder of January is:

Friday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m. – Noon: Ice Skating

Thursday, Jan. 23, 4:30-7:30 p.m.: Community Cross Country Skiing & Ice Skating

Friday Jan. 24, 10am – Noon: Cross Country Skiing

Friday Jan. 31, 10am – Noon: Cross Country Skiing

The next Outdoor Club meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27 In Mrs. Mannix's classroom at the school. They continue to look for additional help with the program and encourage adults who have an interest and knowledge of skiing, skating and snow-shoeing, or who have an interest in working with the kids, to attend the meeting and find out more about the club and how they can help.
