Getting off to a slow start, the 5th through 8th grade Little Lynx gals struggled to match up to the older, athletic Drummond junior high Trojan girls in a Jan. 18th Saturday morning basketball contest that ended in a loss for the Lincoln A-squad: 17 - 30.
The team has mastered the dribble and one-on-one defense, but they are still tentative in driving to the hoop and going up for a shot with determination and aggressive force.
Elbows were flying on both sides and the physicality of a tough opponent is slowly becoming more comfortable for the Little Lynx. Practice sessions, after all, are kinder, gentler events, but they don’t prepare the players for the heated battle of a real game.
Krymzen Dempster said she was “frustrated” by the fourth quarter and added, “I got aggressive and ornery.”
The high scoring seventh grader, who posted most of her eight points in the last minutes of the game, was learning that it takes a game-face to compete with a rough and tumble team from out of town.
Kylee Copenhaver ran the offensive for the Lynx gals and added seven points to the total. Haley Smith, only a fifth grader, added two points as she played all four quarters in the A-team game.
Even though the score was a disappointment, the fans see a lot of promise in this young team. The starting five are all tall, dedicated, and operate well as a team, running plays and encouraging each other. The future looks bright for ladies’ basketball in Lincoln; hang in there, fans.
