Seasonal weight restrictions on several area streets went into effect earlier than normal this year due to the impact of ongoing freeze/thaw cycles.
The restrictions, which began Feb. 10, last through March 31 and are meant to minimize the impact of heavy loads on paved roads that are susceptible to potholes.
"We're trying to keep surface preservation through chip seal and controlling the weight of vehicles that use it," Lewis and Clark county road and bridge supervisor Kevin Horne said.
Weight limits are set at seven tons per axle, 14 tons per tandem axles or 350 lbs. per inch width of tire.
During the Lincoln Government Day Meeting, Horne pointed out that a modern heavy duty pickup towing a heavy duty trailer loaded with a bobcat or skidsteer may meet or exceed the weight limits.
Locally the restrictions apply to most Lincoln streets, including B, C, and D Streets, 1st Ave Suth, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th avenue, Sleepy Hollow Lane north of Highway 200, and Spring Creek Lane and Sucker Creek Road to the end of the asphalt.
