Community Garden gets ready to grow

The Lincoln Community Garden is ready for spring and getting ready to open for the season.

Gardeners have already been starting seeds at home and are waiting for the greenhouse to officially open and the weather to warm up outside.

This year, the garden is looking to expand outside plots to allow more people in the community access to growing their own fruits and vegetables. Outside plots are available for $25.

The garden is also offering space for those with personal greenhouses to "rent a space" and set up their greenhouses in the confines of the fenced garden area for $25. All indoor greenhouse plots have already been spoken for, but if someone would like to get on the waiting list, they can do so.

The Community Garden has two fundraisers planned at this time. The first is preparing meals for a cycling group that comes through Lincoln at the end of June. The second is their hot dog stand during the 4th of July Parade, which will offer hot dogs, chips and bottles of water. Also new this year, in an effort to raise some additional funds, the Community Garden is looking for folks to become "Friends of the Garden" for a donation of $20. Funds raised from this and the other garden fundraisers will go to help for the upkeep of the garden, fencing and maintenance.

The garden did lose one of its members who had been with them since the beginning of the community garden in 2011-2012. They said goodbye to fellow gardener and friend, Deb Maberry. In her honor, the garden has decided to plant her outside plot with vegetables to be donated to those in need throughout the gardening season. If anyone in the community has starter plants or seeds they would like to donate for Deb's memorial, the garden would be very appreciative.
