Kids learn the basics with Elementary Basketball

Spring brings warmer days, muddy roads and elementary school basketball week!

Coaches Derek Perez and Shane Brown, with the patience of Job, teach the basic concepts of basketball to dozens of Pre K thru fourth grade "Squirmy Wormy," players, whose concentration wobbles between their team strategy and waving to family members in the bleachers.

Grant Keaster joyfully announced that "My favorite thing is shooting!" which is a common refrain among the Pre-K crowd who have trouble "sharing" the ball with their teammates.

With a short basket more fitting of their pint size, the scoring was rapid fire and frequent; the red team edged out blue team 24 – 18.

The kindergarten and 2nd-4th grade players had to heave the heavy ball up to the regulation height basket, so fewer students had the strength to make a shot. First grader Mathew made 12 points on the way to a red team win 18 – 6 over green team; an expected performance when everybody in your family plays basketball.

In the big kids game, Presley and Ty scored the only baskets in the blue team win, a contest in which dribbling, passing and defense actually played a part in the 4 – 2 win over red team.

All the games had a free admission at the gate, but the hilarious antics on the court and the laughter of the crowd made the day a priceless experience for everyone and a good antidote for a long winter of cabin fever.
