Lincoln School to host outdoor spring concert next month

Lincoln Public Schools are taking their spring music concert outdoors this year.

The concert is set to be held in the Hooper Park pavilion on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. All grade levels are scheduled to perform a combination of vocal and instrumental pieces.

The fifth and sixth grade students will be performing using brand new ukuleles the school was able to obtain through funding made available due to the pandemic, according to Lincoln music teacher Darryan Gonzales. Kindergarten through fourth grade students will perform vocal pieces, commented Gonzales, while the middle and high school students will perform band arrangements.

"We also have a Drum-Battle planned, as well as a trio of voice, piano, and drums," Gonzales wrote in an email, adding, "The audience should expect to hear songs that portray hope and despair, laughter, and excitement. The concert is a compilation of songs that reflect the times we live in, and how we use music to continue moving forward."

The idea to host the concert in the park came from the high school students.

"It's difficult to put together a full school production, while also still following the guidelines our school has in place to protect our staff and students, but it's not impossible. All of my students have been supportive and enthusiastic about the concert, and my high school students are responsible for the idea of having the concert in the park," Gonzales wrote.

The school will continue to follow CDC guidelines for outdoor events. Students have been asked to RSVP with the number of people attending the event on their behalf.

"Each family will be assigned a "lot" of grass where they can sit together, unmasked if they choose," wrote Gonzales.

Community members are also invited to the event and asked to RSVP through Gonzales to help coordinate safe seating arrangements. Gonzales encourages people to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to the event and noted that, "There is no charge for attending the concert, but donations for the Lincoln Music Program are happily accepted!"
