Lincoln history teacher Gary Roberson retires

Gary Roberson, who taught history for Lincoln Schools, retired this year after about 15 years with the district.

"I started back in 1992, and I worked close to ten years," said Roberson. "I went back to Virginia to help take care of my parents. Then we came back again, and I've been teaching these last five years."

In addition to Montana history, U.S. history and world history, Roberson taught psychology, geography and government.

He said he probably enjoyed Montana history the most, because of the field trips and hands on activities. Although he didn't teach Montana history this year, the school year did culminate with the Yellowstone field trip with the 2019-2020 Montana history class.

"We all just had a lot of fun, I think us as much as the students," said Roberson in reference to the trip.

In addition to teaching, Roberson also spent some time coaching basketball during his first stint with Lincoln Schools.

When Roberson returned to Lincoln, his first year back he taught 5th and 6th grade. He notes that one of the most memorable moments from his career was during the swan release program.

Roberson ended up holding a relatively antagonistic swan on his lap for the event. He said the swan bit at him and tore at his clothes, and eventually defecated on him.

"The kids vividly remember that, not necessarily because it was my greatest experience, but it was funny," he said.

One of the highlights of his career, said Roberson, has been getting to work at the Lincoln Schools and participate in all of the support the schools give to the students.

"I tell ya, I think the school here in town is just incredible. Just being a part of Lincoln Schools I think is great," he said.

Roberson said he's looking forward to retirement and "hoping to have some fun times, a little traveling, camping, fishing, that sort of thing. Maybe a little kayaking. Plus, I plan on subbing at the school."
