Lady Lynx battle Valley Christian in Senior Night contest

Lincoln High School honors Jessica Zarske and Hayden Dempster at October "Senior Night"

Before the opening buzzer to begin the Lady Lynx vs. Valley Christian Lady Eagles volleyball game Thursday, Oct. 20,  senior athletes Hayden Dempster (football) and Jessica Zarske (volleyball) were escorted onto the gym floor by their proud parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and  uncles. Honored for their dedication, character and hard work in leading their respective teams representing Lincoln and the Blackfoot Valley, Jessica and Hayden received the applause and gratitude of our grateful community.

The announcer revealed these athletes' future education and career choices after graduation and their  all-important advice for underclassmen. Normally, the senior's parents start tearing up as this pivotal moment in their children's lives signals the end of carefree days and a peek into adulthood.

But, the Lady Eagles from Missoula were waiting, and the clock started ticking. It was time to get to work!

The first set was a quick 3 – 25 loss for the Lynx as the Lincoln home squad made adjustments to play without junior standout, Kylee Copenhaver who injured an ankle in last week's away game. Also absent from the lineup was Jaylin Lewenight, leaving only six Lady Lynx players on the floor for the whole night; six courageous hometown athletes facing twelve  junior and senior starters for the Eagles.

The second set was more exciting for the local fans. The first server,  Jessica Zarske, blasted in eleven consecutive rocket serves to make the opening score 11 – 0.  Her serves were thrilling unreturnable aces. What a show! The set was hotly contested including many long volleys back and forth, but the Missoula team squeaked out a win, 21 – 25.

The third set finally began wearing down the six tired Lady Lynx and they fell 13 – 25 to end the game. Missoula was able to sub-in a fresh team on a regular rotation but the Lady Lynx played with gusto, exemplified by freshman Makenna Copenhaver who pounded down a spike at 12 – 21 to put an exclamation point on the contest.
